I also rather liked the design of the Tharks, and Woola's skull joint, and the general polish. carts us around to the various attractions. Carter, being a more passive hero, works as a vehicle which. In this regard I think John Carter does well. But then again, movies with strong plots can be a chore to rewatch. If there's a clear point to be made, 90-130 minutes is fine. I'm fairly convinced that most franchises would work better in the slower tempo allowed by the TV-series format. My theory is that a Martians (who are longlived) came to Earth once, producing this hybrid child, and maybe others. He's stuck at 25-30 with no memories from before. Carter is apparently already not quite human but the movie doesn't mention it.Lack of Princess Aura (Flash Gordon) type outfits.Carter can suddenly be overpowered and held by some dudes. We're three guys and we need to get various. Also their life-sucking motive appeared out of place. Zodanga alone would've sufficed as an introductory villain and I think the Therns were too invasive, introducing that super-weapon (to make other designs obsolete) so early. Whilst sci-fi & fantasy movies often fail to give the impression of larger communities, here I got that same vibe from the Therns instead. Then there was the magical shapeshifting, teleporting, nano-tech Therns.I'm thinking of Woola's speed, Carter's super-jumps, the massive walking city, the frail/noisy ship design, the whole white ape fight with the strange physics (also didn't like the white ape design.) A number of elements in the movie felt over-spectacular and unbelievable.Something didn't feel quite right about the movie though. When the Disney movie came out I had all but forgotten about the plot and characters, except for the green guy and Carter's wide '70s boots. My first contact with John Carter was probably the late '70s comics.
